Stars in my eyes

I visited an observatory for the first time tonight, and my heart is filled with wonder. It has been a very long time since I was in a place where I had the opportunity to see so many stars; where I could just stand and stare upward, losing myself in the beauty of the universe. Gazing up at the enormity of it all brings home to me how incredible it is that we even exist.

I believe that God created us as humans, the same as He created the complexities of the earth and the vastness of the heavens. Science itself has now proven that we are made of the same pieces… particles… ingredients… the very same atoms as the most distant stars. They—and we—are all parts of an uninterrupted whole that is forever a work in progress.

If a human being can create a masterpiece of sculpture, or painting, or writing, or even video that touches our souls, how can we look at the miraculous creation around us and not be awestruck? How can anyone not be moved?

Perhaps people forget how amazing the world can be because, like the stars, its awesomeness is not always visible in the ordinariness of our day-to-day lives. We have to purposefully find that place we can stop and be still, and wait until the heart pollution and mind noise of our everyday life subsides; only then can we allow ourselves to see what was right there all along.
