Every year, when they have the TV special to light the tree at Rockefeller Center, I can’t help but laugh. When my son was about 3 years old, we made it a point to watch the special, so he could see the huge Christmas tree all lit up.
Being young, he wasn’t much for sitting still and watching the show, so when it was time, we called him into the room, and told him to hurry. When he got there, I had him sit down with me, and told him they were about to light the tree.
What makes me laugh every year is the look of horror and confusion that came over his little face when I told him. He just couldn’t understand why they were going to “light” the tree. We quickly realized that he thought they were going to set the tree on fire—just like we “light” the grill, or “light” a fire in the fireplace! He was very relieved when he found out they were only going to turn the lights ON!
He wasn’t amused at our laughter, nor is he amused each year, when we cheerily tell him that it’s time to LIGHT THE TREE! But it makes us laugh!
